It seems that since Star Trek 2 wrapped Benedict has been hanging out here in the US with us Americans for a while. Last night he paid a visit to Dancing With the Stars for the finale and sat in the front row, cheering on Katherine Jenkins, who is a Welsh popera singer (I have some of her tunes on my iPod, she has a beautiful voice). Oh, sure, the one season I don’t watch this show and who turns up? Figures. But you can see a short clip of Benny encouraging Katherine on here. Unfortunately Katherine came in second, with NFLer Donald Driver winning the (oddly coveted) mirrorball trophy.
It’s been a few days since my last post, so I’m just going to throw a few other items of interest in here.
Benedict, Sherlock co-writer/co-creator Steven Moffat and Steven’s wife, producer Sue Vertue, visited the offices of Marvel recently. My first thought when I heard that news was… Dr. Strange! Yessss!! He’s going to be Dr. Strange!! (Which had been rumored for some time.) But no, apparently he was there to do a “This Week in Marvel” podcast (dated May 22nd). The pic above is Steven and Benny, with Benny clowning around with a standee of Scarlett Johanssen as Black Widow. Benny played her husband in the film The Other Boleyn Girl.
You can access the podcast at Marvel.com at this link, through iTunes or Zune. (For Tom Hiddleston fans, see the May 3 podcast.)
When Benny was chosen to play the villain for Star Trek 2, there was some whining that he was too thin to pull the character off. Well, while I think he looks just fine in Sherlock trim, he did pack on some muscles for ST2, as evidenced by these pictures here originally from The Sun, where he had a James Bond coming out of the water moment… almost. I think I’d ditch the trunks with the bird motif for something a little, um, shorter maybe! But nonetheless it is further proof that one should not mess with the Cumberbitches, who put him waaaay over the top in the voting for the title of Sexiest Man in the World. It’s also a poke in the eye to those fanboys who said he couldn’t get ripped enough for ST2. According to Benny, he has gone up two suit sizes, which means his already really tight Sherlock wardrobe is either going to need an overhaul, or he will be in for losing some of the muscle before S3 shoots next year.
Don’t forget the main BAFTA Awards are this Sunday. Benedict is nominated once again for Sherlock, as are Martin Freeman (Dr. Watson) and Andrew Scott (Moriarty).
