Don’t forget that Season 2 of AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire premieres tonight.  It stars Lee Pace (Joe), Scoot McNairy (Gordon), Mackenzie Davis (Cameron) and Kerry Bishe (Donna).

Toby Huss is also back as John Bosworth.

Season 2 fast-forwards a little from where season 1 left off, and gets into the beginnings of internet gaming with Cameron and Donna’s company Mutiny.  Just like Cardiff Electric was Compaq disguised, Mutiny is also a take-off on a real-life company (sorry I can’t remember which one it’s supposed to be).  The show is set in the 1980’s at the beginning of the personal computer revolution.

NPR’s award-winning podcast Serial, a spinoff of This American Life, will be getting a second and third series.  One will air this fall and the other in the spring of 2016.

Serial_via_bbc_dot_comSerial has been a surprise hit for NPR, with over 60 million downloads.  It was the first podcast to win the prestigious Peabody Award.  The first series consists of 12 episodes and follows co-producer and host Sarah Koenig and others as they review the case against Adnan Syed, convicted in the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, 18, his ex-girlfriend.  Syed has maintained he is innocent since his conviction in February of 2000.  He is serving a life sentence.

The 12-episode series ran from October 3, 2014 to December 18th.  You can stream it from various podcast outlets (including iTunes) and on Serial’s official website.  You can download it as an MP3 also.  If you have hearing issues and would rather read transcripts of the episodes, Google “Serial transcripts” and the links to the audio translations on Reddit will pop up.

In February of this year Syed won the right to an appeal on the basis that his defense attorney never sought a plea deal for him.  It could also be argued she didn’t present as effective a case as she could have, and in fact she was disbarred for various offenses both related and not related to the Syed case.  The attorney died several years ago.

There’s no word yet on the stories being used for the second and third series.

The Hollywood Reporter says Tilda Swinton is “in negotations” to join Marvel’s upcoming Dr. Strange movie.

DrStrangeLogoThe Doctor will played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Swinton’s role is guessed to be that of the Ancient One, who trained Dr. Strange in the mystic arts.  In the comics this role is male, so this would be a gender-swapped role, something Marvel seems to be into these days!

The movie will be released in the U.S. on November 4th, 2016.  According to imdb.com, it premieres in the U.K. on October 28th, 2016.  That site is already listing Swinton in the cast, so I guess she needs to sign on the dotted line already.

Since ABC decided not to renew Forever for a second season producer Matt Miller has been free to shop around for a new network for the show.  He tweeted that there’s no news yet about a new channel for it, but keep your fingers crossed.  The Mindy Project found a new place to call home so it’s entirely possible.

In the meantime, check out Forever star Ioan Gruffudd in this weekend’s new flick San Andreas with “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson.  In the cast also is Hugo Johnstone-Burt, who may not be a name here, but in Australia he’s known as police officer Hugh Collins on the television show Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, which I love.  Series 1 and 2 are available on DVD or on Netflix, and series 3 is currently being shown on Australia’s ABC channel.  Hopefully Series 3 will also make it over here stateside.  Miss Fisher was created from the Kerry Greenwood books, if you want to look them up.

Deadline is reporting that Eric Draven/The Crow’s nemesis in the upcoming remake of the Brandon Lee classic will be played by Andrea Riseborough.  Or at least, she is said to be “in negotations.”

The-Crow-brandon-lee-via_fanpopAs you remember — because of course you’ve seen the 1994 flick, right? — the #1 bad guy was Top Dollar.  But Deadline isn’t explaining how a guy is going to be played by Andrea, or if they’re going to flip the gender of the character.

After going through a couple of leads, including The Hobbit’s Luke Evans, Jack Huston is now on board to play Draven.

Brandon Lee was the son of martial artist and action movie star Bruce Lee.  He was killed on the set of The Crow when he was shot in a scene with a prop gun that had a partial bullet lodged in the barrel from a previous scene.  He was 28 years old.  His father had also died while working on a film.

The Crow was originally a comic written by James O’Barr after the death of his girlfriend, who was killed by a drunk driver.

Correction: Robin Ellis plays a judge, not a parson, in this series.  I’ve corrected the post below.  I’ve also found this interview of Aidan Turner (Ross Poldark), Elinor Tomlinson (Demelza) and Ellis from The One Show, uploaded by bixcoits.  In it, Ellis tells us that when he originally played the part of Ross Ian McShane and Timothy Dalton had been in the running, amongst others, but he ended up with the part in the end.  You can check YouTube for other parts of this interview.

Back in the 1970’s the BBC had a miniseries called Poldark, starring Robin Ellis.  It was a huge success.  So of course there has to be a remake at some point!

The BBC has again produced a Poldark miniseries, this time starring Aidan Turner (Kili in The Hobbit) as Ross Poldark.  Sharp-eyed viewers may spot Ellis as a judge in this version.  PBS will be playing Poldark on its Masterpiece series beginning Sunday, June 21st at 9 p.m. Eastern.  It will run for eight episodes.  It aired on BBC One in Britain back in March.

The series is based on the books by Winston Graham, in case you’re interested in looking them up.

Here’s a preview from PBS:

Marvel has released the news that Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit) will be cast in the third Captain America film, Civil War.

MFreeman_via_imdbNow Mark Millar has let the cat out of the bag regarding Freeman’s character, which Marvel did not announce.  According to this article in Radio Times, Freeman will not be playing a superhero.  Looks like he’ll be a regular ol’ human.

The film debuts on May 6th, 2016.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond – the Sherlock Christmas special, which was done in the Victorian era, btw — will come out, well naturally enough, at Christmas.  But what about season 4?  The news is that those three episodes will begin filming next spring.  The special is a standalone episode and so it was decided to have some fun with it and do it in the era of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories.

It’s with a heavy heart that I report ABC is going to pass on a second season of Ioan Gruffudd’s Forever.  Inexplicable to me, considering the finale did very well, and the show improved ratings number greatly over previous shows in that time slot.  But that’s ABC for you.  Hopefully TNT or some other channel will be smart enough to pick up the show.

Ioan’s wife Alice tweeted out the news first as she said Ioan was a little shaken up.  He has since taken to Instagram where he has expressed his disappointment and thanked the fans for their support.

Another surprise is that Castle was renewed for an eighth season.  Not that the ratings aren’t good, they are – but last I knew Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic hadn’t signed new contracts and Stana had been making noises like she was ready to move on.  Also a surprise is the renewal of Marvel’s Agent Carter.  But then, since Disney owns both Marvel and ABC, maybe not so much of a surprise after all.

Do I have to say it?  All day on Twitter I’ve been seeing Star Wars Day, May The 4th Be With You!  Funny.  So I’m not going to say it.  Well, OK, maybe I already did.

So today is a perfect day for several chunks of Star Wars news to emerge.

phasma_Star-WarsAccording to TheWrap, the second standalone Star Wars Anthology film will be all about Boba Fett.  This is the film that director Josh Trank exited last week.

Some casting news for The Force Awakens!  Adam Driver will be playing the villanous Kylo Ren, while Lupito Nyong’o will be pirate Maz Kanata.  In these pics from Variety you can see Driver in costume and Nyong’o doing mo-cap, as her character will be CGI.

Also shown there is Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) as Captain Phasma, suited up in what has to be hotter-than-Hades armor.  Christie was rumored for this part and it has now been confirmed.

Last but not least, if you’re in need of some merch, head forthwith to the Disney Store online where you can get 30% off everything Star Wars through May 10th.  Amazon is also having a deal on digital comics.

May is sweeps month, and you know what that means!  The networks will be closely watching the ratings to see which shows that are on the bubble will be renewed.

I’ve already posted that I think ABC’s Forever, starring Ioan Gruffudd and Judd Hirsch, should get a season two.  They should have paired it with Castle in the first place, but since they didn’t I’ll give them a little bit of free, unsolicited advice.  If Castle gets an eighth season, put Forever right behind it.  And if Castle doesn’t get an eighth season, put Forever in its slot.  The final episode of Forever’s first season is tomorrow.

Also on the bubble: Person of Interest from CBS; American Crime, Marvel’s Agent Carter and Galavant, all from ABC, among others.  Agent Carter was an eight-episode mid-season break series, but I hope it returns next year.
