Fall is coming, and with it the anticipated premieres of some television shows that will hopefully get us out of the late summer doldrums.  There hasn’t been much going on in the theater.  I did see The Hitman’s Bodyguard, but didn’t end up reviewing it.  (Long story short: if you really need to go to the movies it’s OK, but the scene stealer in that film is Salma Hayek.)

Anyway, below are some series (and mini-series) I’m looking forward to or that I thought you might be.  Hit the Calendar page also for other upcoming dates of interest.  Entertainment Weekly has a comprehensive list here.

Outlander – Starz – Sunday, Sept. 10

Star Trek: Discovery – CBS All Access – Sunday, Sept. 24; Netflix will show the series outside of the U.S. and Canada, including the U.K., the day after it airs here

The Voice – NBC – Monday, Sept. 25/Tuesday, Sept. 26

Lethal Weapon – Fox – Tuesday, Sept. 26

LiarSundance Wednesday, Sept. 27, ITV Monday, Sept. 11

The Blacklist – NBC – Wednesday, Sept. 27

Will & Grace – NBC – Thursday, Sept. 28

Marvel’s Inhumans – ABC – Friday, Sept. 29

Poldark series 3 – PBS Masterpiece – Sunday, Oct. 1

Marvel’s Runaways – Hulu – Tuesday, Nov. 21

BBC’s Poldark returns to PBS’ Masterpiece beginning tonight for series 2.  It will be a special two-hour premiere starting at 8pm ET, followed each Sunday through November 27th beginning at 9pm ET.  Official website here.

As this series open Ross (Aidan Turner) has been accused of murder and is heading to jail.  Things are looking bleak for our hero and his love Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson), thanks to villain George Warleggan (Jack Farthing)!

Never fear, though – if you had any doubts, it looks like Ross will cheat the hangman as series 3 has already begun filming.  Digital Spy has the low-down on that here.  In that series there will be a plethora of new characters as they continue down the list of author Winston Graham’s novels.

Here’s a short trailer for series 2:

The BBC’s Poldark returns for a second series in September.  On the BBC it will premiere on September 4th, while here in the U.S. we will have to wait until September 25th for it to show up on PBS’ Masterpiece.

The premiere will be two hours long, beginning at 8 Eastern, so set your DVR’s accordingly.  The series will continue each Sunday for an hour beginning at 9 p.m., and will end on November 27th.

A third series is already being planned.  Some say this throws cold water on the notion that star Aidan Turner will be getting the James Bond gig, but I’m not so sure.  We’re still waiting… and waiting… for Barbara Broccoli to make up her mind on that one.

The BBC looks to be making some big changes.  According to The Telegraph, BBC Four could be eliminated to beef up the budgets for new dramas.  BBC Three will apparently be going online only.

Sherlock has, of course, been very successful, and the Aidan Turner series Poldark has gone through the roof, especially in the U.K.  Downton Abbey had its day also (its sixth and final season will be out soon).  The BBC is wanting to focus its budget on developing more of these kinds of dramas, and they’re not cheap to make.

Cuts by the government is a big chunk of what’s leading to the restructuring.  Another big issue is that the BBC is competing, as is every network in the U.S., with series being developed and released all at once onto online outlets like Netflix.  The article mentions that one thing the Beeb is considering is doing the same with iPlayer to allow for binge watching.

I’ve never understood why the BBC doesn’t give subscriptions to folks who want to see their programming at the same time it’s released in the U.K.  I get that they don’t want to give overseas viewers content for free that their taxpayers are paying for, but I’m sure there would be a lot of folks who would pay a small monthly fee.  Sign me up.
