La La Land has tied with All About Eve and Titanic for the most Oscar nominations at 14.  The musical/romance film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), and pretty much everything else it was eligible for.

The other Best Picture nominees were Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Moonlight, Lion and Manchester By The Sea.

Joining Stone in the Best Actress category are Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), and Natalie Portman (Jackie).

Best Actor nominees are Gosling, Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), and Denzel Washington (Fences).

The nominees for Animated Feature Film include Moana, Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle and Zootopia.

Deadpool was unfortunately shut out, even in the technical categories.  Doctor Strange received a nomination for Best Visual Effects.  Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was also nominated in that category as well as for Sound Mixing.

You can see a list of all the nominees here on the official website.

Congratulations to all!

Just got to see Marvel’s Doctor Strange today, so I’m going to give you my take in a pretty spoiler-free kind of way.

If you’re a fan of the Marvel superhero movies, this ranks up there with the best of them.  In case you don’t know the backstory, Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a hotshot neurosurgeon whose hands are badly damaged in a car accident.  Unable to get them healed in the U.S., he travels to Nepal to search out a mystical healer.  Little does he know the “healer” is a sorcerer, The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).  She is, in fact, the current Sorcerer Supreme.

The Ancient One takes Strange and teaches him the mystic arts, along with Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Wong (Benedict Wong).  Just in time, it turns out, for villain Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) and some of his followers to make some mayhem on behalf of an even bigger bad.

My favorite character in this movie, outside of Strange himself, may just be The Cloak of Levitation.  If you see the movie you’ll understand.

As you can imagine for a film about the mystic arts, the special effects folks had a massive amount of work on this one.  Some critics have called the film “trippy,” and all I can say is, don’t go to see this if you’re a) drunk, b) are having vertigo, or c) get sick on roller coasters.

Do stick around for the credits.  There are two extra scenes, and yes, you’ll have to sit all the way through the credits for the final one, but it will be worth it.

Worth a full price admission if you can’t get into a matinee.

With 14 reviews in, Marvel’s Doctor Strange is showing a 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer!

The critics are actually liking it, although a few are saying it’s too much like Iron Man.  By and large, though, they are loving the casting, the visuals and the soundtrack.  Below are links to some of the reviews.  SPOILER NOTE: some of these may contain varying levels of spoilers, so read at your own risk.

Collider – includes a video review

For SNL fans, Benedict Cumberbatch will be hosting on November 5th.

Here in the U.S. we have to wait until Friday, November 4th for general release.

Marvel has launched Hero Acts, a campaign to benefit Save The Children, a charity to help children who are the victims of natural disasters, are at risk,  need medical attention or an education.  The charity works in 120 countries, including the United States.

If you upload a photo of yourself (or someone else) posing as your favorite Marvel character to marvelstudiosheroacts.com, Marvel will donate $5 to the charity from now until the end of the year.

Introducing the initiative in the video below is Doctor Strange himself, sometimes known as Benedict Cumberbatch, along with Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans and other Marvel actors.  Don’t miss the ending!

Empire Magazine’s website is showing off their new Doctor Strange covers, one of which is shown on this post.  These are for the November issue.

empirecover_nov2016They also have a couple of images from the film, one with Benedict and Rachel McAdams, and another with Mads Mikkelsen.

There’s a persistent rumor that Doctor Strange will show up in Avengers: Infinity War/Film and other sites are putting two and two together from some comments Cumberbatch made.  No official confirmation from Marvel… at least not yet.

In the U.K. Doctor Strange will be released on October 25th.  In the U.S. it will be November 4th.

On to Sherlock news.  The BBC has released two of the three episode titles for the upcoming fourth series.  They are: The Six Thatchers and The Lying Detective.  As noted in the article, The Six Thatchers appears to be a reference to the Arthur Conan Doyle story The Six Napoleons, and The Lying Detective may be The Adventure of the Dying Detective in disguise.

The BBC will be showing the series beginning sometime in January.  Let’s cross our fingers that PBS Masterpiece will be showing it stateside at the same time.

We now know the name of the villain Mads Mikkelsen is playing in Doctor Strange.

kaecilius-marvel-comics-close-up_via_comicbook_comComicBook.com has the skinny on Kaecilius, courtesy of a prequel comic released by Marvel. The image shown is obviously Mikkelsen.  Kaecilius, according to marvel.wikia.com, is associated with Baron Mordo, who is played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the upcoming film.

Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, a.k.a. The Sorcerer Supreme, and will be released on November 4.

When you were a kid there was little that was more important in getting ready for a new school year than which lunchbox you were going to carry.  Would it be Star Trek, Barbie, Peanuts…?  A weighty decision to be sure!  Your mom may have had a lot to say about the clothes you’d be wearing, but the choice of lunchbox largely rested on your own small shoulders, or at least that’s the way it worked at my house.

DS_lunchboxBut now your tykes can be the coolest of the cool, because the Doctor Strange lunchbox (and other wallet-emptying merch) is on its way, as reported by ComicBookMovie.com.  No kids in your home?  Hey, no kids, no problem!  This could be an excellent addition (or start) to a lunchbox collection of your own.  No dings, scratches or stale peanut butter smell necessary.

Makes you wonder if Benedict Cumberbatch ever dreamed of being a superhero on a lunchbox…

I’m sure this is only the beginning of a small flood of Doctor Strange merchandise, but at least the release of this gives me hope we might see another trailer soon!

The film arrives November 4.

Principal photography for Doctor Strange wrapped a few days ago, and Benedict Cumberbatch wasted no time getting to his other job as Sherlock Holmes.  Season 4 is now underway!  (If anyone spies Tom Hiddleston around the set, let us know.)

Jimmy Kimmel (ABC) will be having a Marvel-themed week.  I have heard that Benedict will be introducing the Strange trailer himself on Tuesday.  It will also be attached to Captain America: Civil War, which comes out May 6th in the U.S.

Den of  Geek has a helpful post here to catch you up on the Sorcerer Supreme, along with a cast list and a slideshow of the concept art for the film.

Several shots of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo filming in New York City have leaked.  Here’s a slideshow from ComingSoon.net, photos via Getty Images.

They appear to show Strange and Mordo working together after Strange has had some kind of altercation, leaving him with a bloody face.

Director Scott Derrickson decided to join in and sent this tweet:

The film appears November 4th.  The official website is here.

Entertainment Weekly has released some pics of Benedict Cumberbatch as well as some concept art from Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange.  EW will be producing a double issue with Cumberbatch as Strange on the cover.

Mystical-Strange-005-EWI thought maybe the costuming would be less a copy of the comic art and more just inspired by it, but it appears they’re going with a costume that’s very close to the comics.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige also confirmed in EW that Mads Mikkelsen will be playing the main villain, although he won’t give the character’s name away.  In that article Feige gives some vague indication of a storyline, saying sorcerers Strange and The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) protect humanity from “scary things” in other dimensions.  He explains Mikkelsen’s character this way:

Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect,” says the Marvel Studios boss. “[He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams also star.
